About The Calais School

The Calais School is a leading private, non-profit school in special education serving young people in grades K through 12 for over 41 years. Our mission is to empower and encourage students with special needs including ADHD, reading and math weaknesses, anxiety and mood disorders and Autistic Spectrum Disorders. Learning disabilities are diverse and cut across all socio-economic strata.
Additionally learning disabilities greatly influence all aspects of development. The Calais staff provide a safe, nurturing, and academically challenging environment for students requiring new behavioral and academic strategies in a non-judgmental atmosphere. Success is achieved through:

Academic programs based on NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards; Behavior Modification Programs that encourage students to employ appropriate social skills, problem solving and assertiveness; Our Cognitive/Behavioral Counseling team provides emotional support and cognitive strategies for students; Learning Consultants provide IEP supervision and consultations with teachers to ensure the use of individualized and differentiated instruction; Speech & Language specialists address the basic skills of language and social skills development; Reading Specialists assist students with specific reading difficulties; Career & Technical and Transition Education Program to provide career development opportunities.

Students come to Calais by referral from local school districts, therapists, and counselors throughout nine northern New Jersey counties.
