About Dorothy B Hersh High School

The Dorothy B. Hersh High School is a fully accredited private school of The Arc of Monmouth which provides academic and vocational training for students with intellectual disabilities, multiple disabilities, autism and communication impairments between the ages of fourteen and twenty one. Hersh High School offers a full-time comprehensive curriculum in academics and career training/transitional skills as well as a flexible part-time program offering the option to choose either an academic or vocational track. The goal of the school is to help students develop the skills and attitudes necessary to make the transition to adult life. Tuition to the high school is paid by the student's sending school district, which also provides transportation.

Education Program
An Individual Education Plan (IEP) is developed for each student entering the school and is carried out by our staff of trained professionals. The entire program is geared toward helping students become as independent as possible. The curriculum offers a wide variety of subject matter to achieve this goal including:

Academic Skills such as functional reading, functional mathematics, computer use, communication skills, science and social studies.

Job Exposure & Employment Training including job club, job seeking skills, job sampling, employer expectations, work attitudes (punctuality, initiative, etc.). Volunteer and paid work are available in a variety of setting such as offices, restaurants, day care centers and military installations.

Career Transitional/Training Skills involving structural learning experience. Transition to adult work settings is fostered by classroom instruction, volunteer work and job experiences.

Supplemental Services including speech therapy, occupational therapy, adaptive physical education, physical therapy, music and/or art, horticulture therapy, vocational assessment social work, parent training and psycho/social groups.

Family Life Education is designed to develop self-understanding, interpersonal relationships, knowledge of the human body, and drug and alcohol awareness.

Flexible Part-Time Options are available to meet the needs of students, families and school districts.

Extended School Year is a six week summer session available to students when recommended

After graduation ¦ what??
Upon graduation, students often go directly into jobs in the community. Others may enter an adult vocational program or an adult training center. Follow-up contacts help assure that the graduates receive continued support to reach their personal goals for adult life.

Faculty
The school's Chief Administrator is fully certified by the New Jersey Department of Education. All classroom instructors are certified as Teachers of the Handicapped and all supplementary staff are certified in their specialties. Teacher assistants are assigned to all classroom instructors.
